TRAILER BRAKE ASSEMBLIES / ELECTRIC / HEAVY DUTY 12.25" x 5" Left Hand Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - 12K-15K Capacity
A heavy-duty, forward self-adjusting (FSA) electric brake backing plate designed for 12,000 lbs to 15,000 lbs axle applications with a 7-bolt flange mounting pattern.
Part Number: BK-12HDE-01
12.25" x 5" Size
12K-15K Capacity
Overview
This BK-12HDE-01 electric brake assembly is a high-quality aftermarket solution designed for heavy-duty trailer applications where high-capacity stopping power is required. Engineered with an electromagnetic actuator, this assembly expands the 5-inch wide shoes against the drum for consistent performance under load. As a Forward Self-Adjusting (FSA) model, it eliminates the need for manual adjustment, maintaining optimal shoe clearance automatically during forward operation.
R&P Service Insight
This 7-bolt configuration is the industry standard for 12K and 15K axles. Proper orientation is critical for safety.
- Left Hand Orientation: Specifically for the Driver's Side; magnet arm must point toward the front of the trailer.
- Self-Adjusting: FSA technology ensures the brakes don't lose effectiveness as the shoe lining wears down.
- Heavy-Duty Build: Weighing nearly 28 lbs, this is built to handle the heat and stress of 15,000 lb axle loads.
R&P Knowledge Hub
Compatibility: Replacement for industry standard 23-446. Works with standard 12.25" drums designed for 5" shoes.
Vehicle / System Fit: Heavy-duty trailers utilizing 12,000 lb to 15,000 lb axles (Goosenecks, Dual-tandem equipment trailers, etc.).
Installation Notes: Requires a 7-bolt mounting flange. Bolts to the axle with a 60–90 ft-lb torque requirement.
Performance Insight: Electric magnets are non-polarity sensitive, making wiring straightforward, though heat-shrink connectors are highly recommended to prevent road salt corrosion.
Brand & Fitment Note
Selling Brand: R&P Carriages Aftermarket Replacement
Application Reference: References to part numbers such as 23-446 describe compatibility and application style for industry-standard 12K-15K running gear.
What This Means: This is a high-grade aftermarket assembly designed to match the fitment and function of original equipment on trailers with 12.25" x 5" brake systems.
Before Ordering: Verify you have a 7-bolt flange. Standard 7K axles use 5 bolts and will NOT accept this assembly.
R&P Repair Insight
Maintenance is the key to longevity for electric drum brakes. Always keep the friction surfaces "dry."
- Contamination Check: Never use grease or oil on shoes. Use only dedicated Brake Cleaner spray.
- Magnet Wear: Inspect the magnet face regularly. If copper coils are visible, the magnet has reached its wear limit.
- The Burnishing Step: New shoes must be seated. Perform 20–30 controlled stops (40mph to 20mph) after installation to "mate" the shoes to the drum.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: Ensure the trailer is properly supported by heavy-duty jack stands before removing the drum. Verify the 7-bolt mounting pattern matches your axle flange before installation. Burnishing the brakes (20-30 stops) is required to seat the new shoes to the drum for full braking power.
