Chrysler Crossfire Bow Tension Cables!
This is a set of two newly manufactured bow tension cables for your Chrysler Crossfire Roadster. If you’re replacing your convertible top, this is the easiest time to have your bow tension cables replaced. Do it now and not have to worry about it in the future.
These are a pair of tension cables that help to keep the convertible top from slamming the windshield header when the top is lowered and closed. Additionally, these cables aid in lifting the bow up above the windshield header allowing the lowering function to work. The top detent in the hinging on the frame also plays a part in this function. These work on 2004-2008 Chrysler Crossfire convertibles. The factory originals were made with para cord which tend to stretch out overtime and fail. The original barrel end was made of plastic which again fails with age.
The factory tension cables are no longer available. These cables are made of braided stainless steel cable covered in silicon tubing. The barrel end is made of brass. These replacement cables will far outlast the original factory tension cables. Use your existing springs. Springs are not included!
The detent cables (sometimes called “detention cords”) on a Chrysler Crossfire convertible top serve a very specific mechanical purpose: they control and limit the movement of the top frame, ensuring the top opens and closes smoothly and locks into the correct positions.
Here’s a breakdown:
⸻
1. Control Bow Movement
• The convertible top is made of multiple bows (front, center, rear) connected by pivots.
• The detent cables attach between the center bow and the front/header bow, running through guides.
• They help the center bow “snap” into the correct detent positions when the top is opening or closing, preventing it from overshooting or misaligning.
⸻
2. Provide Tension
• The cable is slightly tensioned so that the top frame moves under control.
• Without it, the center bow could shift freely, causing:
• The top to not seat correctly on the windshield header
• Noise or rattling during driving
• Uneven fabric tension or binding at the rear
⸻
3. Assist Automatic Top Operation
• The Crossfire’s convertible top is hydraulically powered.
• The detent cables guide the frame, so the hydraulic cylinders don’t have to control every tiny pivot precisely.
• This ensures the top moves smoothly and locks into the proper detent points at each stage (fully open, partially open, or fully closed).
⸻
4. Maintain Proper Alignment
• Keeps the top fabric taut and aligned with the side rails.
• Prevents wrinkling or pinching of the fabric along the bows when raising or lowering the top.
⸻
✅ In short:
The detent cables act like mechanical guides and tensioners that make the top move predictably, lock in the correct positions, and protect the frame and fabric from damage. Without them, the top can misalign, bind, or wear unevenly.
