How to replace fule injectors in your car?

1.The metal rod over the fuel injectors is the fuel rail. Use the socket and ratchet to remove the bolts and brackets holding the fuel rail in place. Depending on the model, some engines will need the fuel line disconnected from the fuel rail in order to move the rail.

A :Make sure the engine is cold enough to touch. Disconnect the battery.

B :Remove plastic engine covers using appropriate socket. Set covers aside.

2.First, disconnect the mainfuel lineat the end of the rail. There may be an additional line at the other end, so remove that one, too. The fuel rail is held in place by screws or bolts, depending on your car's setup. Remove these screws or bolts. If your wiring travels over the top of the rail, see the next step to disconnect the wiring first. With everything disconnected from the rail, pull it away from the fuel injectors. Most fuel rails are just pressed onto the injector tops, once you've removed the hold down screws or bolts it should pull away, with a little soomph.

3.Using a small standard screwdriver or pick remove the retainer clip from the fuel injector and work the injector from the rail. Keep a shop towel handy to catch excess fuel while removing the injector.

Inspect the old fuel injector making sure the sealing O rings are accounted for.Match the new injector to the old unit, some injector replacements can look a little different which is normal.

4.Use clean engine oil to lube the O ring seals preventing seal damage during reassembly.

5.Push the new injector into the fuel rail and reinsert the trainer clip and tighten down the fuel rail.

6.After the job is complete start the engine while using a flashlight to check for leaks to ensure the job was done correctly.

    Common Fuel Injection Problems.

    Clogged Fuel Injectors.

It's not easy to diagnose a fuel injector as the symptoms it causes can be similar to a bad spark plug or ignition coil, meaning, one of the cylinders is not firing. If it is related to a clogged fuel injector it is likely due to old fuel being ran through the engine, resulting in residue getting stuck inside the injector or its filter basket. If a fuel injector becomes fully clogged it will likely have to be removed from the vehicle and be professionally cleaned, as additives and fuel rail induced injection cleaners will not be able to clear the clog, as they can't pass through at all.

    Dirty Fuel Injectors.

If fuel can still pass through the injectors, but not the proper amount, they will generally be considered dirty. Dirty fuel injectors will affect the flow rate of the fuel, which can result in poor idling, stalling, hard starting or sputtering, which reduces your car's ability to effectively accelerate. While some gas tank additive injector cleaners may help reduce the build up in the injectors, the only real way to clean them and restore peak performance is to remove them and use the proper chemicals and equipment.

    Leaking Fuel Injectors.

If the fuel injectors are leaking externally you should not drive your vehicle. While a leaking injector will likely cause issues similar to that of a dirty one, you will often be able to smell gas under the hood or even spot a leak, depending on your make and model. Externally leaking injectors pose a fire risk and need to be completely replaced.

How to Stop a Fuel Injector Leak.

    Step 1

Raise the hood of the car an inspect the fuel injector rail while the car is running at idle. A strong odor of gasoline is a good indicator that there is a fuel leak. Look carefully, however, at the top and bottom of the fuel rail. Use caution: Fuel injection systems are under high-pressure and gas spraying out of the injector seal is highly combustible.

    Step 2

Shut the car off immediately if a leak is present. Remove the fuel pump fuse, wrap the leaking injector with a shop towel to soak up the gasoline and start the car. Allow the car to run until it stalls. This step relieves the fuel pressure in the fuel rail and the rail can safely be removed.

    Step 3

Disconnect the injector wiring harness and remove the fuel rail bolts that hold the rail in place. Remove any associated fuel lines or hold-down clamps that will prevent the rail from being lifted up to unseat the fuel injectors from the engine. Once it is loose, lift the rail up and remove each of the injectors. They are held in place by snug-fitting O-rings and are easily pulled out. It is not necessary to keep them in order.

    Step 4

Remove the upper and lower O-ring seals on the injectors. Place the injectors in a carburetor soaking basket and drop the basket in a bucket of carburetor cleaner. Allow the injectors to soak for several hours to thoroughly clean them of carbon deposits. After soaking, rinse the injectors with clean water and immediately blow them dry with compressed air.

    Step 5

Install new O-rings. Make sure the O-rings are designed for use with gasoline and fit the vehicle being serviced. Standard O-rings will quickly deteriorate and fail. Lightly coat the injectors with petroleum jelly and insert them into the fuel rail.

    F&Q

How long do fuel injectors last?

Depending on your type (quality) of gas and oil filter change frequency it will last from 50,000 miles to about 100,000 miles. On average we would recommend you to change them every 60,000-80,000 miles.

    What is a fuel rail?

The fuel rail is the long, round metal bar that runs along the top of the injectors and is held onto the manifold with a few bolts. The main function of the fuel rail consists in the optimal distribution of the fuel (gasoline, methane, etc.) to the injectors in the high or low pressure supply systems of endothermic engines.

How long does it take to replace fuel injectors?

It shouldn’t take more than 2 hours or so if you are mechanically inclined.
