I started to restore a pair of 1958 Mercury Mark 58 electric start motors but time and my health are forcing me to pass the project on to someone else
The Mark 58 is the \"holy grail\" of classic Mercury runabout motors. It was the first year for the 44 cubic inch Super Thunderbolt powerhead and the last year for the \"round top\" cowling. These motors were rated at 45+ horsepower and incorporate 12 volt electric starting. The built-in alternator charges the boat\'s battery. With the fluted stainless wrap-around cowl, these motors define Mid-Century style. Nothing finishes off a classic runabout as much as a period-correct engine and the Mark 58 is the most desirable 1950\'s outboard. It was well designed, parts are plentiful and it will run circles around contemporary competitors
The upper and lower cowls have been powder-coated in red and the highlights have been polished. The front breast plates has been polished to a mirror finish
These motors are great candidates for restoration. They are partially disassembled but 99% complete. The powerheads have good compression. The castings are in good shape with no cracks or breaks. Expect at a minimum to have to rebuild the carburetors and fuel pumps, replace the impellers, fuel hoses, spark plugs, plug wires, timing belts, seals and gaskets (These items are all readily available from us and other sources)
I will sell the motors separately or as a pair. I can supply as a short shaft (for 15\" transoms) or long shaft (for 20\" transoms)
We can supply a new electrical harness, new throttle/shift cables and a good used remote control box at extra cost
We stock parts for vintage runabouts and classic Mercury and OMC outboards
