WWII Part - Early Dual Read RPM Indicator - US Navy Application (?) by Standard ElectricOne odd-duck little dual needle RPM indicator that has seen an unusual modification and it\'s devoid of any original data plates or helpful identification markings. I suspect it\'s a very early war unit as manufactured for USN, as it\'s sort of close of the General Electric Mark V unit that was used in some of the N3N-3 \"Canary\" training aircraft as well as the TBM and F6F. There\'s very little to go on with identificaiton on this one.
The instrument face is marked RPM - THE STANDARD ELECTRIC TIME CO. SPRINGFIELD MASS.
I am not familiar at all with that manufacturer.
The face has two indicator ranges - the larges measures in 100 RPM increments from 0-8 in increments of two. The smaller and lower range and needle measures 1000 RPM and is marked 0-12.
And that, as they say, is that for markings. If there was a data plate on this one, it\'s long gone. The original electrical connector (probably a 2 or 3 pin Cannon connector on the very back of the instrument) is long gone. There\'s a really odd-ball mod to the back with a little metal bracket and a relay and a wiring block and some odd lengths of shabby wiring. It appears the Cannon connector was removed and this was purposely hard-wired. Why I haven\'t the foggiest of ideas. I suppose one could go to the effort to source a connector and rebuild it if you wanted to go to that effort.
Instrument itself looks nice from the front and it\'d make a great panel filler. Good glass and good markings on the faceplate and it looks nice. The instrument markings hint that this one is a RADIUM instrument. Haven\'t check it, but it has all the telltale signs of early war heavy radium paint application. As such this sale is CONUS ONLY. International purchase will be cancelled as we do not have proper export license for military hardware and if scanned and any radium detected the instrument is confiscated and destroyed by Customs. Much as we like to support restoration projects out-of-country, please be advised this instrument isn\'t for you. International buyers - please - don\'t offer. We don\'t want to see this one destroyed.
This is called a \"sensitive\" instrument not because it takes criticism to heart like my wife when I tell her she probably shouldn\'t wear a tube top in public anymore, but in readings. The instrument provides prescise reads / resolution of engine speed versus those with a single pointer for full RPM range. This type was used in many single engine Navy applications.
Metal case. Nice yellow-green markings. Brass panel keeper nuts and screws still in on this one.
Something of a harder instrument to source. Late war units usually had a \"grooved\" or \"slotted\" rear housing. This is rounded and held together with brass rod hardware.
Last couple of pictures show a similar unit in a TBM panel. Close, but different.
